What Does It Mean?

Humping, or mounting, is a common behavior in dogs. While it can be associated with reproduction, there are several underlying reasons for this behavior:

  1. Playful Behavior: Dogs often hump during play as a way to express excitement or assert dominance.
  2. Stress or Anxiety: Some dogs hump when they’re feeling anxious or stressed, using it as a coping mechanism.
  3. Attention-Seeking: Dogs may hump to get attention from their owners or other dogs, as it often elicits a reaction.
  4. Establishing Dominance: In multi-dog settings, humping can be a way for a dog to establish their position in the social hierarchy.

How to Make Them Stop Humping:

  1. Redirect the Behavior: When you see your dog starting to hump, redirect their attention with a toy or engage them in a different activity.
  2. Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog for stopping the behavior when you give them a command to “stop” or “leave it.” Use treats or praise to reinforce this.
  3. Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Ensure your dog is getting enough physical exercise and mental stimulation, as boredom can lead to unwanted behaviors, including humping.
  4. Socialization: Regularly socialize your dog with other dogs to help them learn appropriate behaviors in a group setting.
  5. Consult a Trainer or Behaviorist: If humping persists, consider seeking the assistance of a professional dog trainer or behaviorist to address the underlying issues.
What Happens if You Allow It:
  • Social Issues at Dog Parks: Encouraging or ignoring humping can lead to conflicts with other dogs and their owners at dog parks. Some dogs may react aggressively to being humped, which can escalate tensions and create safety issues.
  • Unpleasant Experiences at Doggy Daycare: At doggy daycare, uncontrolled humping can disrupt play, lead to fights, or result in staff having to intervene, which may not be ideal for your dog or the staff.
  • Reinforcement of Bad Habits: Allowing humping to continue without correction may reinforce the behavior, making it more difficult to modify later on.

Finding the Balance:

While mounting behavior can be natural in certain contexts, it’s essential to manage it appropriately. Teaching your dog alternative behaviors and addressing the root causes can lead to a healthier and happier experience for your dog in social settings.
